OSHA Online Portal for Electronic Submission of Injury and Illness Reports Opens August 1 | New York Benefit Advisors

On August 1, 2017, Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) injury tracking application (ITA) portal will be available to employers. The portal allows employers to electronically report information about workplace injuries and illnesses. Establishments with 250 or more employees that are currently required to keep OSHA injury and illness records, as well as employers with 20 – 249 employees from certain industries with historically high rates of occupational injuries (high-risk industries) and illnesses, are required to use the ITA portal to report information from their 2016 Form 300A by December 1, 2017.

OSHA’s ITA launch page provides frequently asked questions addressing, among other things, how the data should be submitted — by direct data entry, uploading comma separated value (CSV) files, or by electronic submission via an application programming interface (API). The site also provides sample CSV templates and files and API specifications. OSHA estimates it will take employers 20 – 32 minutes to complete the reporting process, depending on employer size.

This same portal will be used in future years for filing Forms 300, 300A, and 301 (for establishments with 250+ employees) and Form 300A (for impacted high-risk industries). The deadline for electronically reporting 2017 injury and illness data is July 1, 2018. Reporting will be required by March 2 for each year thereafter.

Impacted employers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the ITA portal, including file upload or electronic submission requirements, before the December 1, 2017 deadline.
